An Ancient Master of the Skies
Long before dinosaurs walked the Earth, dragonflies were already soaring above ancient forests and wetlands. These remarkable insects belong to the order Odonata, a name derived from the Greek word odon, meaning "tooth," referring to their strong, toothed jaws. Dragonflies share this ancient lineage with their close relatives, the damselflies. While they are often mistaken for one another, each possesses its own unique beauty and fascinating adaptations.
The ancestors of modern dragonflies first appeared more than 300 million years ago during the Carboniferous Period. At that time, giant dragonfly-like insects patrolled prehistoric skies, some with wingspans approaching two feet (60 centimeters). Although today's species are much smaller, they remain among nature's most accomplished aerial hunters, changing remarkably little over millions of years.
Dragonflies and Damselflies
Dragonflies and damselflies belong to the same order but can be distinguished by several characteristics.
Dragonflies are generally larger and more robust. At rest, they usually hold their wings extended horizontally or slightly downward. Their large compound eyes often touch or nearly touch at the top of the head, giving them exceptional vision.
Damselflies are typically smaller and more slender. Most species fold their wings neatly over their backs when resting, and their eyes are widely separated on either side of the head. Their graceful appearance and delicate flight have earned them a special place in folklore and garden landscapes alike.
Together, dragonflies and damselflies comprise more than 6,000 known species worldwide, with hundreds found throughout North America.
Habitat
Dragonflies are closely tied to freshwater habitats because the earliest stage of their lives is spent underwater. They thrive around ponds, lakes, marshes, rivers, slow-moving streams, bogs, and wetlands. Many species prefer clean, healthy waterways, making them valuable indicators of environmental quality.
Adults can often be seen resting on reeds, cattails, branches, rocks, fences, or garden plants where they wait for passing insects. Sunny days provide the ideal conditions for hunting, as dragonflies rely on warmth to power their incredible flight.
An Extraordinary Life Cycle
The dragonfly undergoes incomplete metamorphosis, passing through three life stages:
Egg – Females lay their eggs in or near freshwater, attaching them to aquatic plants or depositing them directly into the water.
Aquatic Nymph – After hatching, the young dragonfly—called a nymph or naiad—lives beneath the water's surface. This stage may last from several months to as long as five years, depending on the species and climate. During this time, the nymph is a formidable predator, feeding on mosquito larvae, aquatic insects, tadpoles, and even small fish. It breathes through specialized gills and molts numerous times as it grows.
Adult – When fully developed, the nymph climbs onto a plant stem or rock above the water. Its outer skin splits open, and the adult dragonfly slowly emerges. After its wings expand and harden, it takes flight, beginning a new chapter of its life in the air. Although the aquatic stage may last years, the adult dragonfly often lives only a few weeks to several months.
This remarkable transformation—from an underwater hunter to an agile aerial predator—has inspired countless stories and symbolic interpretations throughout history.
Masters of Flight
Dragonflies are among the finest fliers in the insect world. Their two pairs of wings operate independently, allowing them to hover, glide, fly backward, make sharp turns, and accelerate with astonishing precision.
Their enormous compound eyes contain tens of thousands of individual lenses, giving them nearly 360-degree visionand allowing them to detect even the slightest movement. This exceptional eyesight, combined with their speed and agility, makes dragonflies highly successful hunters.
Some species can reach speeds of 30 miles (48 kilometers) per hour, and studies have shown that dragonflies capture the vast majority of the prey they pursue, making them one of nature's most efficient predators.
What Do Dragonflies Eat?
Dragonflies play an essential role in maintaining ecological balance by feeding on many insects that can become pests.
Adult dragonflies commonly eat:
Mosquitoes
Midges
Gnats
Flies
Moths
Small butterflies
Flying ants
Other small flying insects
Aquatic nymphs consume:
Mosquito larvae
Water fleas
Aquatic insect larvae
Tadpoles
Small crustaceans
Tiny fish
Because both the nymphs and adults feed heavily on mosquitoes and other insects, dragonflies are welcomed by gardeners and naturalists alike.
Guardians of Healthy Ecosystems
Dragonflies are far more than beautiful insects—they are important contributors to healthy ecosystems.
As predators, they help regulate populations of mosquitoes and many other insects, reducing imbalances within wetlands and surrounding habitats. In turn, dragonflies themselves become food for birds, frogs, fish, spiders, turtles, and other wildlife, making them an important link in the food web.
Their presence is also an indicator of environmental health. Many species require clean water to reproduce successfully, so abundant dragonflies often suggest that wetlands, ponds, and streams are thriving.
Protecting wetlands and freshwater habitats not only benefits dragonflies but also supports countless other species that depend on these rich and diverse ecosystems.
Colors and Diversity
Dragonflies display an extraordinary range of colors and patterns. Depending on the species, they may be brilliant sapphire blue, emerald green, ruby red, golden amber, copper, violet, black, brown, or delicately transparent. Many species shimmer with an iridescent sheen as sunlight reflects from their wings and bodies.
Damselflies are equally captivating, often appearing in vivid metallic blues, turquoise, emerald greens, soft violets, and brilliant scarlets. Their slender forms and jewel-like colors have inspired artists and storytellers around the world.
North America is home to many familiar dragonflies, including the Common Green Darner, Blue Dasher, Widow Skimmer, Eastern Pond Hawk, Halloween Pennant, and the striking Twelve-spotted Skimmer. Beautiful damselflies such as the Ebony Jewel Wing, Familiar Bluet, and American Ruby Spot add flashes of color to streams and woodland ponds throughout the summer.
Whether gliding over a quiet woodland pond or darting across a sunlit meadow, dragonflies and damselflies remain among nature's oldest and most captivating ambassadors. Their ancient lineage, extraordinary abilities, and ecological importance remind us that some of Earth's greatest wonders are found in even the smallest of creatures.
